I picked up a DJI osmo action up as soon as came out with high hopes of replacing my gopros. With some awesome specs right off the bat it seemed exciting, but the more I dug into things the more I didn't like it. Here are my thoughts on it!
Status with latest firmwares 30/5/2019:
Testing showed that the Osmo action's lens and sensor is almost identical in performance to the gopro hero 7 black. This was done by analyzing raw images.
After the camera does its internal processing, it turns out that the osmo image is darker than gopro, especially the dark areas, with no extra dynamic range to get darks back. The camera also systematically over-sharpens everything, and we have no control over it.
Concerning stabilization, it is not as good as the gopro in dealing with vibrations. If those are too strong, or the shutter speed too low, the camera leaves jitters in the footage, unlike gopro's hypersmooth. The Rocksteady stabilization also performs an excessive crop, about twice as much as Hypersmooth.
In general, the UI is great, and so is the front screen, but the excessive sharpening makes it hard to use when you want maximum quality...
