Overview and testing of the lapRF by ImmersionRC Personal Edition Lap timing system.

Firstly a big shoutout and thanks goes to ImpulseRC for allowing us to grab one of their 4 lapRF systems they had just received from ImmersionRC. If it wasn’t for them this could have taken a lot longer to get our hands on one of these. The flight footage testing you seen in this video is our second time using it. Admittedly the first attempt was with only about 15mins of light left so it was very rushed.

During the first attempt at using this timing system, it managed to get all my lap times but miss every single lap that Thomas did. There was a number of reasons that contributed to the missed times. Firstly I had the Puck to the side of the gate because I didn’t trust having it in the middle of the gate, this in combination with how low and fast Thomas’ passes were, meant the patch on the lapRF may have missed the VTX pass. Also speaking to Immersion there was a problem with the Code Documentation and the way in which the Threshold was being calculated.

We provided all the data we had from that session and Immersion went on its way to come out with the fix. At the same time I noticed BlueTooth range wasn’t great at all. In fact the Airbird timing system I had seemed to have much better Bluetooth range.

When I took apart the lapRF I noticed two things, when laying flat on the ground the Bluetooth antenna wasn’t pointing in the best direction and the VTX Patch antenna was also pointing up. So with a Stand that could hold it at 40 degrees and the Timing system placed just outside and to the side of the Gate, the VTX patch would cover the whole Gate and the Bluetooth antenna would be in a better position to offer more range.

The Second test (or first proper test) was a complete success! I have to thank ImmersionRC for actively working with the whole community and in the space of a week, transforming this timing system to something that kind of worked, to an insanely functional product that just works with minimal fuss. It’s also worth mentioning that the head of ImmersionRC Tony has been the one doing all the coding for both Android and iOS! The hours he’s put in to getting the software to where it is in such a small space of time is just nuts! Great Work.

Anyway I think the video pretty much covers everything else that needs covering.
